You rarely see any films coming out of Kazakhstan, so when I was given the chance to watch and review a horror/comedy from the region I was intrigued as to what was in store.
What we have is a witty and very funny story about a group of men who go on a fishing trip and for one of them Dustan just to get away from his wife for one last time before his baby is born.
But after witnessing a brutal murder by a group of thugs, the three are suddenly on the run to escape their clutches, but things turn even stranger when a one-eyed man out for revenge joins the chase the body count begins to escalate. Will any escape alive and will Dastan get to see the birth of his child?
A big hit at FrightFest 2021, it is a very difficult film to describe as it has a bit of everything from gore to laugh-out-loud comedy, it is a bonkers, well-made thriller which works very well and is a lot of fun to watch. As the story progresses it gets more and more outrageous as the three guys try and escape the clutches of the gang and then the one-eyed psychopath. These men all have problems and can find it incredibly difficult to express themselves properly, be it for love, for friendships, or a mixture of both.
The only other films that I can think of that have a similar tone are Tucker & Dale vs Evil or maybe Evil Dead 2, Imagine the Burt Reynold film Deliverance but with a comedy slant, with parts that you shouldn’t laugh at but can’t help yourself, it is a brutal comedy of errors but with some emotional resonance added to the story. The pace is fast and unapologetically brutal in places but Sweetie, You Won’t Believe It is definitely one of the most fun movies I have seen this year, and urge all horror fans to check it out.
The Blu-ray has been released by 101 Films and has an incredibly vibrant transfer, clear and sharp and the audio is again fine. Also the English subtitles are very easy to follow. The only extra is a trailer.
Great fun and something totally different you should take the time to seek it out.
