Suspiria is a lot of peoples favourite Dario Argento film, for me its a close call between this and Deep Red, but the film has finally been given a new 4K restoration and has now been released on Blu ray in Italy.
Suzy Bannion is an American ballet student, travelling to Germany to study at an exclusive dance academy in the Black Forest. After one of the students and her friend are hideously murdered in the first of Argento’s breath-catching set-piece killings, Suzy discovers that the academy has a bizarre history and, as the body count rises, she gets involved in a hideous labyrinth of murder, black magic and madness.
The film has had Blu ray releases before in the UK and elsewhere but it was always reported that the colour scheme and audio was wrong and not as it should be. This new 4K remaster puts things right and I can report I have never seen the film look better.
Colours literally pop out of the screen, black levels are solid and the film grain is still visible as it should be. Audio on this discs gives you English and Italian DTS MA 5.1 or Mono option. The 5.1 mix is fantastic bringing you really into the film, the music by Goblin is one of the high points of the whole experience and it really gives your surround system a workout.
The extras are the only real disappointment as all you get is an interview with Dario Argento but that is in Italian without subtitles and a trailer.
Suspiria is also getting a release from the 4k master in Germany and the USA this year but for those in the UK this is a great option as it is region B coded and is a very good price, where the special editions from the USA and Germany will be much more expensive but will have many more special features.
A fantastic release of a classic film. Totally recommended.
