John Carpenter’s Christine – Review

Director John Carpenter has gained a huge cult following and its easy to see why with classics such as Halloween and The Thing but here he took on a novel by famed writer Stephen King and the uneven result was Christine.

Christine was born in Detroit … on an automobile assembly line. But she is no ordinary automobile. Deep within her chassis lives an unholy presence. She is a red and white 1958 Plymouth Fury whose unique standard equipment includes an evil, indestructible vengeance that will destroy anyone in her way. She seduces 17-year-old Arnie Cunningham (Keith Gordon), who becomes consumed with passion for her sleek, rounded chrome-laden body. She demands his complete and unquestioned devotion and when outsiders seek to interfere, they become the victims of Christine s horrifying wrath.

King’s best-selling novel was one of many of his books around that time to be transferred to the big and small screen and director John Carpenter seemed the perfect man to match his storytelling skill. The story builds nicely and Keith Gordon does a fantastic job of portraying the nerd to cool guy after buying a run-down old car that he could not resist and restoring her to her former glory. The supporting cast are all good, especially veteran actors Robert Prosky and Harry Dean Stanton, the cinematography is crisp and beautifully shot, but the main problem with the film is that the car is just not scary.

The way it is filmed and lit look great, but unlike other similar films such as Duel and The Car, we know from the start that it is an evil entity, those other films kept you guessing if there was someone behind the wheel or a supernatural force at work. character development is good and overall it’s an enjoyable experience but just sub-par as far as Carpenter’s work is concerned.

The Blu ray released by Powerhouse Films is a beauty. The picture dazzles with great colour and a good grain structure. Audio gives an impressive DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 as well as original LPCM 2.0 stereo mix. Both are solid and impress. Extras include a very good making-of feature split into three parts and goes into great detail about the production of the movie with interviews with cast and crew.

Add to that an isolated soundtrack option, lots of deleted scenes and the trailer and you get a very comprehensive package. A great first release from a new label. Fans of the film need wait no longer and purchase this release.
