Studio Canal’s new UK Blu-ray release of The Straight Story brings fresh life to a remarkable true-life road trip. The film follows elderly Alvin Straight as he embarks on a 260-mile journey from Laurens, Iowa, to Mt. Zion, Wisconsin, to reconcile with his estranged brother. The twist: he travels the entire distance on his sit-down lawn mower, refusing to let age or frailty stand in his way.
Along the route, Alvin encounters a variety of people whose lives are touched by his calm wisdom and lived experience. Through gentle conversation and humble storytelling, he becomes a quiet catalyst for reflection and healing. The pacing is unhurried, but it allows you to view stunning Midwestern landscapes beautifully.

Perhaps most surprising is that the film comes from director David Lynch, typically known for the surreal (Wild at Heart, Blue Velvet). Here he delivers something restrained, humane and deeply emotional. Richard Farnsworth’s performance as Alvin carries added poignancy — he was gravely ill during filming and accepted the role out of admiration for Alvin’s determination and dignity.
Expect a mix of warmth, laughter and moments that resonate. A standout sequence in a bar between Alvin and a fellow veteran offers a quietly powerful recognition of shared trauma and survival — one of the film’s most touching moments.

The transfer is excellent, showcasing rich contrast and natural colour that suits the wide open landscapes. The disc includes some good extras, such as:
