Pizza delivery guy Daniel loves cars and driving fast and decides to change his job to a taxi driver using his specially modified car. When he unwittingly gives a high-speed ride to a police officer, he is forced to accept a deal to keep his driver’s license: a stint as the cops personal police car driver. Now on the other side of the law, Daniel becomes the unlikely mastermind behind an investigation into a gang of German bank robbers.

This French action comedy is a mixed bag overall. The car chases are superbly done and shot and bring excitement to the story. The cast is likeable even if the subplots tend to take over at times. The streets of Marseille are captured beautifully and director Gerard Pires keeps the film from becoming too serious in tone. Apparently, director Luc Besson wrote the screenplay for Taxi while waiting for his Sci-fi film The Fifth Element to get green lighted in Hollywood.

Taxi gets a UK Blu Ray release from Second Sight and it seems to be identical to the French release by ARP Sélection. The transfer is good, bright and colourful although there are traces of DNR being applied in certain scenes. Audio has two options French DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1  and French LPCM 2.0 Stereo. Both are solid and the DTS 5.1 is superbly rendered especially in the action scenes. The English subtitles provided are clear and easy to follow but are forced so you cannot turn them off if you wanted to.

The main extra is a 15-minute making of which is an interesting look at the production with lots of behind the scenes footage. You also get a theatrical trailer. Overall a good release of a film that has gained a cult following over the years and you can see why especially in the excellent driving scenes.
