Horror fans of a certain age will have a soft spot for the original Evil Dead. Released at the very early stages of video recorders being introduced to homes across the UK, the film came into a lot of controversy and was one of the films unfairly prosecuted during the ridiculous Video Nasties scandal. Now regarded rightly as a low budget classic there were rumours for years that a remake was to be made and finally in 2012 those involved in the first gave the reboot a green light. Was it worth it?. In a word No.

Five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin. When they discover a Book of the Dead, they unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.

Nothing new as far as the story goes then, but the initial arrival at the cabin and the reasons for the characters going their starts out well. Its when the horror starts that things quickly go downhill. Sure the gore effects are astonishing and graphic, but that is part of the problem.

The first film had a lot more going for it apart from the goo, imaginative camera work and great direction gave it a new fresh look. With this film its just one gory and not frightening gore shot followed by another. The acting is in most parts pretty good for this type of film, Jane Levy especially is excellent as the tormented Mia, it’s just that you become numb to her plight after all the excessive violence. Yet another reason why Hollywood should stop remaking classic films and start shooting something more original for a change.

The Blu ray released by Optimum is very good indeed. Colours are bold and natural, blacks are deep, altogether an excellent transfer. The sound is 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio and as expected is very well mixed, almost reference material.

Extra’s are, to be honest disappointing. The audio commentary is worth a listen if your a fan of the film as the Director Fede Alvarez talks about the making of the movie and how he has applied some of his ideas into the franchise.

Directing the Dead – The Director Fede Alvarez talks about a little bit about the movie and how he has applied some new ideas into the story. He briefly discusses the cast and the process of filming.

Evil Dead the Reboot – Bruce Campbell and Rob Tapert talk about the remake, why it took so long and the changes and casting of the new movie.

Making Life Difficult – The Director Fede Alvarez talks about the great toll the film is taking on lead actress Jane Levy.

Unleashing the Evil Force – This featurette takes a closer look at the “Book of the Dead”.

Being Mia – This featurette follows Jane Levy as she shows the viewers the difficulty in making this movie and how she found it exhausting towards the end.

If you are a fan of the torture porn type gore movies you may get a kick out of this reboot, but for me, Evil Dead (2013), was as expected,  a big disappointment.
