Escape Plan – Blu Ray Review

In Escape Plan two of the 80’s action icons, Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger finally star in a film together, not counting the small cameo’s Arnold did in The Expendables and the end result is a mixed bag but a satisfying action thriller.

When a structural-security authority finds himself set up and incarcerated in the world’s most secret and secure prison, he has to use his skills to escape with help from the inside.

Stallone plays Ray Breslin, the expert in the business when it comes to escaping from high-security prisons. He uses this skills to help prisons become escape proof but ends up framed and incarcerated in a master prison that he designed. The strict warden (Jim Caviezel) wants him there for the rest of his life, but with the help of an unlikely ally (Arnold Schwarzenegger), Breslin may have a shot at finding a way out.

The premise is an interesting one and is set up nicely, the set design of the prison itself is certainly different and the action when it comes has a few surprises up its sleeve. The chemistry between Stallone and Arnold is good, some funny one-liners as expected are delivered, in fact, Arnold is very good here, showing a maturity in his style and acting ability.

The Blu ray released Entertainment One comes with a great 1080p HD transfer presented in 2.40:1 aspect ratio. The detail is very sharp with well-defined and colours are sharp and clean. Audio has a strong DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 which as expected is superbly rendered with strong bass and very clear dialogue.

Extras are good too. You get an audio commentary with director Mikael Håfström & writer Miles Chapman,  Deleted scenes,  ‘Maximum security: the real-life Tomb’ Featurette,  ‘Executing the plan’ Featurette, and ‘Clash of the Titans’ Featurette. Word of warning, do not watch the extra features if you have not seen the film as they contain major spoilers!

A decent release which should please action fans and a much better story than I expected.
